Umut presents: VA – Lifecycle: Creation
The latest coup from Blackout is part of a new LP project called ‘Lifecycle’. The first of three parts is entitled ‘Creation’ and fires Blackout sound from every hole. With on board Audio, Black Sun Empire & IMANU, Misanthrop and last but not least Current Value, who would have thought it.
The record opens the godfather of neurofunk, Audio. Mr. Greenall is delivering first class too. ‘Marauder‘ opens with an audio typical tendency towards sinister epicness. He does everything right, the vocal to the drop sits tight. Only the drop doesn’t sweep me off my feet at first glance due the lack of impact. But after 8 bars the whole thing looks different again. Buzzing saw all along! BSE’s collabo with IMANU is as expected one of the more musical kind. Although I don’t want to deny the Dutch trio’s musicality, I’m pretty sure that the cyberpunk flair has come from IMANU’s side of things! The intro gains more and more orchestral drama to the drop and you are quickly welcomed by noise-soaked claps, snares and hats, gently played around by the driving sub. Next on the menu are germs. Namely Gridlok’s ‘Germ’ in a crunchy remix by Misanthrop! After his last LP I definitely didn’t expect this old school take on the original. Flurrying Hats, said Crunchiness, worked well with the available material. With ‘Overturn’ Current Value once again goes off the rail. Classic dreamy intro meets puffy drums meets brute sound design. The result is Tim Eliot’s own interpretation of Jump Up, pushing, aggressive, lifts the mood!
Conincidence that Misanthrop’s remix comes out at exactly this time *cough*. Just a short time ago a friend told me about this very record. The first release of the probably biggest Blackout project in 2020 makes a more than solid impression, fun and promises that there are probably even more exciting tunes waiting for us!
