Umut presents: Deerhill – Upstream EP
Overall, not much needs to be said about MethLab as a whole. The label has done groundbreaking work in its lifetime and has consistently and effectively delivered great output. So it’s no wonder that Deerhill’s debut release, the ‘upstream EP’, more than justifies this statement and represents a truly worthy end for the label and thus also for the Integral Aesthetics series.
Do You See It’ is the cinematic prelude Interstellar has been waiting for and gives us an idea of what lies ahead. Starting with the dramatic build-up to the pumping main part which ends in a glistening crescendo to shoot the listener completely away with the twisted synths of ‘Bound’. It’s an unstoppable swirling sound that makes its way into your ears with pulsating basses, far-reaching pads and cleverly built in drum shuffles. A little bit of Bladerunner feeling comes across! Mind Incursion’ plays with melancholy, weird flute solos (?!) and switches easily into a lulling atmosphere. After a nerve-racking beginning just the right thing. With ‘Zero-G Fire’ we enter wilder realms, here it thunders and roars in a very subtle way. You feel like you’re being taken by the hand on a ride in the weightlessness of the track. Void Fall’ keeps what the title promisesits. Somewhere in the buzzing shallows of its cyberpunk aesthetic you finally find a light at the end of the tunnel. Starfall’ is the perfect finale of a trip into the heart of Deerhill’s spirit, because here you find the elements of the previous tracks as well as a certain funky touch that stands out.
With a penchant for drama, epic and good storytelling the newcomer presents us an impressive ballad in 6 acts full of cinematic sounds in IDM and electronica guise.. In the future there will probably be even more from Deerhill. We are talking about collaborations with NickBee and Burr Oak. Brace yourselves!
