How much were we looking forward to summer 2020? What hadn’t we already planned? Until due to … well, you know—almost all festivals have been canceled. But there is a glimmer of hope on the underground: the Membrain Festival.
In the south of Croatia, the Membrain-crew is organizing a slimmed-down and pandemic-friendly edition of their festival. Instead of the originally planned four days, there are only two. The number of crew, artists and guests have been minimized. Security measures are taken. It’s a try to celebrate responsibly despite Covid-19.
And the stars seem to be aligned in favor: The Membrain Festival takes place in Martinska, and is therefore outside the urban areas of Šibenik. There is enough space for physical distancing: the area is significantly larger than people attend the festival. And: it is an outdoor event. Furthermore the festival also takes additional hygiene measures.
»We initially planned a 4 day program across 3 stages with 80 DJs from right across the globe! Unfortunately, such an event suddenly became unrealistic, and so we’ve had to postpone until next year. However, this summer we are doing a smaller ‘mini-rave’ festival, over 2 days and a smaller crew, which will keep the story and the spirit of the festival alive!«

This years Membrain Festival is an attempt to organize a festival despite Covid-19. We will report on the success of this. We will update the article as soon as there is news about the measures at the festival.
The programm of the Mini-Festival
During the two days of the program on August 7 and 8 at Martinska, 5 minutes from the center of Šibenik, a total of 25 DJs from England, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Hungary and from the local region (Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia) will perform. All artists* represent current trends of the underground bass scene from drum&bass, to dubstep, jungle, grime, dub and much more.
The goal of the Membrain Festival is to combine the atmosphere of the European music capitals with the pleasant Mediterranean climate, resulting in a symbiosis, that is more and more appreciated by an international audience. For a fair price of 30€, you can enjoy two days of your beloved music on the sound systems that can properly deliver the quality of this music. The campsite fees are included in the ticket price.
»Membrain was one of them festivals you can’t compare to anything else. It’s fresh, kicking, have the most unexpected crowds and setting. You spend the days in the city of sibenik exploring and having a journey in a time machine, approaching the festival- not knowing what to expect. You then go up that hill, not knowing what will come on the other side, watching the sun sets on the ‘eyes of Hitler’, calming down before the storm. As the sun goes down and the day goes dark, you go on stage, the crowed looks far, but sounds very close by. Vibing from beginning to end! You can play whatever your soul desires….. in any possible combination, and they will be there with you…… all the way! All through the journey. Wish I could go back right now. One of a kind.«

The entire vibe about Membrain is one of friendlyness and no frills. The first part becomes immediately clear when you notice that the organisers themselves have their family members working on the site, in the bar, the kitchen and the general goings on. The visitors are all easy going music enthusiasts or performers themselves. The no frill part is essential, yes there may be rocks strewn everywhere and the lighting is so minimal that you really have to get adjusted to it all and not break your neck (wear decent shoes!), but when you get to be there and you have these awesome artists perform under a sky with shooting stars, overlooking this amazing bay and heavy rolling basslines, you are reminded that life doesn’t need much to be amazing.

The Membrain was definitely my festival highlight last year. The journey over the sea alone was mega. The floors and people were all very familiar and you were warmly welcomed. My set was at 35 degrees in the shade and still many people came and watched it. I am already excited about this year. 🙂

About the Membrain Festival
Launched in 2016, the Membrain Festival is a subcultural underground bass music festival that cultivates its community, remains true to the original ethos from which the entire movement was born, and continues to drive it forward today. A conglomerate of oldschool rave feelings with at the same time unexplored acoustic boundaries of bass music in the ideal Mediterranean environment of Martinskas (Šibenik, Croatia). It’s a place where the possibility arises to bring together, share and above all experience subculture – to promote and network the essence of the underground movement.
The organizers Driftkikker Productions is a Dutch art and event agency that organises bass music events worldwide.
