Umut presents: Was A Be – Passive Aggressive EP [GDNCE010]
One of the most beautiful things about this authorship is to get sooo much good music sent. Like in the case of the ‘Passive Aggressive EP’ by Was A Be on Guidance. The Italian makes future D&B and can casually look back on releases on Shogun, Critical or The Dreamers. In addition, the Cologne scene will probably see him more often as he has recently joined the D:FRNT crew. Guidance is a young up-and-coming label which develops into a real insider tip under the conscientious guidance of Ulterior Motive.
The title track ‘Passive Aggressive’ takes us into a disturbing scenery which quickly gains some momentum by Was A Be adding a distinctive playful lead and snazzy drums. On top comes this wacky schizophrenic bass that stumbles indecisively between good and evil. No rest for the wicked!
Mirrored’ with Visages on the other hand is a slightly different house number. Positive vibes in the intro, definitely. Somehow not because it gets foggy and dark along with the vocal to the drop. The distorted main synth at the beginning develops into a wobbly lulling melody and I’m really amazed about the gloom of the transition. Stop for a moment, and the factual drums continue to step. Yummy!
Boom! Virus vibes always get me! Well, at least ‘Shell’, number three in the race, has plenty of them in the introduction. In the main part Was A Be finally decomposes your brain with this one particular saw. To make sure that the whole thing doesn’t get boring, there are some shrewd fill sounds, in the end Jungle-Vibes all along! Roller?
Double Tap’ fits perfectly into the timbre of the EP and sounds slightly different. A good portion of madness makes up the track, be it the weird lead melody, the distorted wobble synth or this absolutely mad bell.
Was A Be closes this extremely round EP with a bouncy banger in the form of ‘Blue Roots’. Jungle elements, animating drums and the catchy sounds of the artist can also be found here. Nevertheless, he manages to keep me in a good mood and stay tuned until the end. Chapeau…
Overall the EP possesses a metallic character and the Techstep allures are more than approved. Despite the fact that the Italian remains linearly true to himself, the overall work remains exciting! Guidance is slowly but surely developing into a definite ‘buy-on-sight’ label and I never get tired of playing their records! What do you think?
