Umut’s Selection of the Week 014 • Redpill – Lunch Time EP [EATBRAIN070]
Redpill strikes again! This time he’s cooked up something fine on Eatbrain and I hope you’re hungry because its Lunch Time. Teaming up with the Frenchman Merikan resulting in what can only be called an orchestral massacre.
The title track, Lunch Time, absolutely hit the nail on the head. Dramatic synths leading to a filter-contaminated vocal sample that’s sure puts a big grin on your face. Personally, I’m sitting here with goose bumps. Then the tune drops and chaos ensures. The frequency shifts come suddenly and may leave one or another on the floor sniffing. Massive tune!
Now let’s take a look at Boom Boom, track number two. The synth pads in the intro push the track distinctively along, that’s for sure. The syncopated, twitching lead flexes against the backdrop of the tunes dirty, noisy bassline. And if that’s not enough, the vocal sample is announcing triplets and Redpill isn’t leaving the funk of behind this.
Children Of Chaos is probably the right track title for a Redpill x Merikan collab. These two have been causing chaos on the dance floor for quite some time now, and it was more than time they got together. What came out of it feels like a wild stegosaur on steroids. Snappy, aggressive drums whip you along with the rolling bass into an all-consuming vortex of sound. The short transition is just long enough to catch a short breather before the next tidal wave of fatness rolls over you.
And The Hero Will Fall, what a piece. Is it weird that I’ve got goose bumps again? I could probably write a whole page of text about the track, which really stands out against the EP’s other tracks. The orchestral build-up feels like ages but the warmth and variety isn‘t making it last long. What is particularly noteworthy is the fact that Redpill does not just push his bass through the speakers here he also accommodates tempo changes and harmony. In addition to this tragic synth-lead (Michel Berger, WTF Remi ?!) boosted with a touch of real bass that leaves me feeling warm and contented. By the way, there is a wicked second drop for halftime lovers, so watch out for that!
The epicness of And The Hero Will Fall, the aggresiveness of Children Of Chaos, the distorted bassline of Boom Boom, the frequency changes of Lunch Time. All this and more comes sandwiched together in Fusion, the last track of the EP. No more words needed.
Getting Goosebumps twice plus five banger alarms what an impressive EP. I just don’t get tired of writing about Redpill’s releases. The tracks are high quality, entertaining and Remi himself is just mega sympathetic. I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more from the Frenchman! Buy the EP!
