Umut’s Selection of the Week • Transforma – The Darkest Void / Decoder [BT081DD]
Transforma, what can I say? Since I discovered the artist from Australia for myself it is nice to watch his success. Whether formerly on labels such as Kinetik, Mindtech, Red Light and Sinous or most recently on C4C Limited, Kill Tomorrow and Bad Taste, he remains true to his brute style and continues to evolve.
The Darkest Void proves just that. Besides his usual Neurofunk beasts Transforma presents a very playful track. Starting with gloomy pads and a steppy drum loop, the track quickly develops into an unstoppable steamroller that, thanks to the vocal hits (which are sounding like a xylophone), radiates a touch of the Caribbean Islands. Whether long bass rides, classic break edits or funky bass hits, there’s something for everyone.
Decoder on the other hand seems really monstrous. Here we start with dreamy pads, a glitchy lead and clean drumwork,. But shortly before the first climax it becomes clear that you’re not here to get too chilly. The robot sound at the drop gives me the rest and the sound construct that follows anyway. Screeching synth hits alternate with the rolling drums and the sawing bass line. Even if the basic rhythm is chopped off, the drums mentioned above easily make up for it. The transition supports the whole robot-faible of the track and prepares us dramatically for another round.
Big EP, big label, what can I say? Well done!
