Umut’s Selection of the Week 008 • VA – The Korsakov Compilations Vol. 1 [KRSKV001]
The name Korsakov might already be familiar to my readers because recently an exclusive interview by me with the heads behind the steadily growing indoor festival series has been published by our friends from baesse.de. Anyone who has read the verbal ping pong knows that the guys are now launching a label, Korsakov Music, and the first compilation is packed with heavy pieces by some of the greatest artists of the old and new generation.
Let’s start with Droptek whose name doesn’t mean anything to me but I think that’s OK. The tune starts with strong disturbing noises and really leaves you in the dark. At least when it drops, you know that it’s brute halftime.
High Maintenance is not an unknown name and contributes Tick Tock, a track that is more interested in the dance floor and sounds a bit too Fatso (by Metrik) to me.
Run For Cover by Counterstrike and Bl4ck Owlz shares the same interests as Tick Tock, but rather aims at five o’clock in the morning. Full neurofunk hardness ahead!
Agressor Bunx are bringing their classic sound with Own Root which nowadays consists of Neurofunk- and Jump Up- elements which are provided with a sick Jungle attitude.
Empathy Box by Feint is full of emotions and wicked synths. You can easily classify it in the category Upfront DnB.
The Clamps, what can I say. After his phenomenal album which was released on September 24th on the French label Kosen Production, good Julien can’t do anything wrong anymore. He proves this once more with If Alice Would, the piece just stamps and rolls you away in the finest Neurofunk manner.
Merikan is one of the hottest newcomers and can already look back on tracks on labels like Blackout, PRSPCT, Cause4Concern and Close2Death. The Italian makes Neuro-Jump Up so hard, that even the softest mind becomes very hard in the heart. Vector is exactly that and is even celebrated by a nagger like me.
We continue with another Italian living in the Netherlands. Matteo is his name and Neurofunk is definitely his specialty. We are talking about Maztek whose work NoDataNoDrama gives the word steamroller a whole new meaning. Despite the stomping attitude the record still sparks off well.
Levela seems to want to go for the more driving deep jump up lately. Tension by him is exactly that. Pumps good, sounds good, keep going.
Since Gridlok is one of my absolute favorite artists I was happy like a little child when I read the tracklist of the album. I was even more happy about the fact that Tarot with Swift MC just sounds cleaner and fuller as back in the days. Funky drums, oppressive bass and Swift’s bars round the whole thing off wonderfully.
After L 33’s last EP on Eatbrain came out the good man busts out Let Dem. Stomping neurofunk construct with a light emotional touch in the intro and transition.
Let’s continue with two more old-established rabbits from Eatbrain, label boss Jade and his first officer Mindscape. Dangerous is really dangerous, sparks casually through the night and voice samples were not spared.
Rido was lately allowed to work at the opening ceremony of this year’s Let It Roll and brought along a track called Reflection for the compilation. Anyone who follows the artist knows that he relies on melodic neurofunk. He fully supports this thesis with his latest work and I think it’s great!
Oh Zombie Cats, every time I read the name it warms my heart. The same thing happened the first time I heard Fall Away. Neurofunk with female vocals, full of pressure and pretty technoid just how I like it. It reminds me a bit of the days when the dream couple from Germany was still called Rregula and Dementia.
