Umut’s selection of the week 003 • Redpill – Fission EP [BLCKTNL062]
You don’t have to lose big words about Blackout Music NL anymore. The third label of the well-known DnB trio Black Sun Empire has cemented its place next to magnitudes like Cause4Concern and RAM. The latest release comes from French producer Redpill. Whole six tracks! In addition to Blackout, the ex-member of Black Owlz can look back on releases on labels such as Bad Taste, Cause4Concern and Eatbrain. The sympathetic guy is also known for his quite nerdy track titles.
Hold It Like That is definitely typical Redpill. You can easily get fooled by the warm, innocent intro because as soon as the first kick drum lands you know that there is definitely no fooling around. The whole thing then swings up pretty fast to just sweep you away in the main part. Hard synthriffs are hitting even harder drums and pushing you out of your wing chair, car or spaceship.
Jealousy relies on bells in the intro which holds a dreamlike homage to Requiem For A Dream. Again, Redpill does not hesitate and leads us into the drop with female vocals. The main part also has quite a bit of pressure and develops to a sure-fire success thanks to tricky fills and a creaky lead. The frenchman let the intro melody return for the bridge. Then the second drop leaves you ice cold in the rain. Anyone a pinch of unexpected halftime?
With Fission you realize that the good man is apparently fully on female voices. As the music box plays down, the voice haunts out of an ether of reverb and delays and then becomes clearer and clearer. On the way to the drop it gets more and more blatant, snare sets in and boom there you sit amidst a staccato of reece basslines and hard instruments. Right before the transition another melody sets in and the percussions are trumping each other. Sick stuff!
Next on the menu is Ghost In The Club. This tune is also really steep. Cinematic intro meets full dancefloor attack. The sounds pile up into a thunderstorm of shrill and synths and this one tin snare in the mainpart. The pause inbetween is ideal for a minimum breathtaking. The tune not meant to make you stay for a while! You can notice this not at least because of the track length of 3: 22min.
Rub A Sub is further proof of Redpill’s affinity to playful intros. Bells, positive atmosphere pads, reggae influence before dropping, the piece lives up to its name. It is getting very sophisticated and detailed to the first drop. But who now expects the usual shredder gets a good twist in the plot after the half of the first part. It gets a bit more reduced, more direct. Pause, the reggae sample flashes again and releases us straight into a vortex of familiar arpeggiated laser synths and crisp drums. Shortly before the end of the song Redpill leaves you with a little gimmick. Like!
Show Me What You Got, I absurdly thought of Rick & Morty when first reading that title, and indeed, the famous sentence from season two episode five can be heard. The track exudes a sci-fi atmosphere a la Bladerunner from the very beginning which is quickly replaced by a true steamroller. Right when it drops the mentioned sentence comes into play. Simply legendary! The brutal reece makes no prisoners and is driven by the slightly pitched snare. At the end it is gettin melodic again which completes the whole perfect.
Summa Summarum Redpill has heavily refilled all expectations after his debut single on Blackout [BLCKTNL058] and presents a colorful set of his current influences. The whole thing is well implemented and produced clean! Show me what you got!
